This is the ultimate “day after the holidays” comfort food. Unlike the Loaded Potato Soup we discussed earlier, which leans into heavy cream and cheese, an Old-Fashioned Ham and Potato Soup is all about the smoky, salty depth of the ham bone and the natural starch of the potatoes to create a rustic, silky broth.


The “Nonna-Style” Ham and Potato Soup

1. The Ingredients

  • The Star: 2 cups Diced cooked ham (or a leftover ham bone/hambone).

  • The Veggies: * 5 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes (peeled and cubed).

    • 3 Carrots (peeled and sliced).

    • 2 Celery stalks (diced).

    • 1 Large yellow onion (diced).

  • The Liquid:

    • 6 cups Chicken broth (or water).

  • The Creamy Finish:

    • 5 tbsp Butter and 5 tbsp Flour (to make a roux).

    • 2 cups Whole milk.

    • Salt & heavy Black Pepper (be careful with salt, the ham is salty!).
