Step-by-Step Brewing Instructions
Follow these simple steps to master the extraction of flavors, ensuring your tea is robust without becoming overly bitter.
1. Toast and Wake Up the Spices
Place your cinnamon sticks and bay leaves directly into an empty saucepan over medium heat for about 1 to 2 minutes. Gently shaking the pan to prevent burning will activate the essential oils in the spices, making your final brew significantly more fragrant.
2. Bring the Water to a Simmer
Pour the 4 cups of filtered water directly into the saucepan with the toasted cinnamon and bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low. Let the spices simmer gently for 5 to 7 minutes. This allows the woody structure of the cinnamon and the dense fibers of the bay leaves time to release their deep flavors.
3. Infuse the Hibiscus Flowers
Remove the saucepan from the heat completely. Stir in the 1/2 cup of dried hibiscus flowers, making sure they are fully submerged. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid to trap the aromatic steam. Let the mixture steep undisturbed for 10 minutes.
4. Strain and Sweeten
Using a fine-mesh strainer, pour the liquid into a heatproof glass pitcher or large mason jar, discarding the spent flowers and spices. While the tea is still warm, stir in your choice of sweetener until it is completely dissolved. Taste as you go—you want enough sweetness to soften the tart edges of the hibiscus while still letting the spiced undertones shine through.
