Things You Absolutely Should Not Put in a Dishwasher

3. Wooden Utensils, Cutting Boards & Bowls

  • Why: Heat and moisture cause warping, cracking, and bacterial growth in splits.
  • Do this: Hand-wash, air-dry upright, condition monthly with mineral oil.

4. Nonstick Cookware (Teflon, Ceramic, etc.)

  • Why: Detergent breaks down coating over time—leading to flaking and reduced performance.
  • Do this: Clean with soft sponge and mild soap; never use steel wool.

5. Insulated Drinkware (Yeti, Hydro Flask, Thermos)

  • Why: Heat damages vacuum seals, ruining temperature retention; gaskets trap grime.
  • Do this: Hand-wash body; remove lid/gasket and clean separately with a bottle brush.

6. Aluminum Pots, Pans & Bakeware

  • Why: Turns dull, dark, or pitted; may react with detergent.
  • Do this: Hand-wash with gentle cleaner (Bar Keepers Friend works well).

7. Copper Cookware

  • Why: Loses shine, develops tarnish, and may leach metal if unlined.
  • Do this: Wash by hand; polish occasionally with lemon + salt or commercial copper cleaner.

8. Fine China & Gold- or Platinum-Rimmed Dishware
